About Laurie

How long have you been planning destination weddings?
I have been a travel agency owner for over 20 years and have solely been planning destination weddings now for over 12 years. I got certified as a destination wedding specialist in 2004 and certified as a wedding planner in 2012. I absolutely love what I do and all of the faucets that come with planning a destination wedding.

Why did you choose to become a Destination Wedding Specialist?
I felt the need to offer a more specialized service to our customers. I have a passion for travel and serving memorable, unique and special holidays and knew that I could best put my knowledge and skills towards my passion for destination weddings.

What’s your favourite part of the job?
Meeting brides and grooms and having a positive impact on their destination wedding. I love finding them the best destination and property that caters to their needs and making sure that all details are taken care of.

Which destination is your favourite & why?
I have many favorite destinations as I have had the opportunity to travel to many places in my career. Bora Bora (French Polynesia) and Fiji are my top picks for a magical and romantic honeymoon. Mexico is my top pick for service and quality of resorts. Thailand for off-the-beaten-path, the Caribbean such as St. Lucia, Barbados and Bahamas for that island getaway experience, and Italy and Greece for the history, culture and food. I also couldn’t forget the Dominican Republic as I lived there for a couple of years and love the music, beaches, people and their zest for life.

Do you have a wedding story you would like to share with us?
I had my own a destination wedding in December 2013. We chose a boutique 5-star all-inclusive hotel called The Beloved, in Playa Mujeres, Mexico. It was truly a dream come true. We had 56 guests come from across Canada to share in this special occasion with us. The food was spectacular, the staff were amazing, the wedding was picture-perfect and the best part of it all were the smiles and laughter of each of our guests.

Do you have any quick tips for us?
The best tip that I have is to work with a CERTIFIED and EXPERIENCED destination wedding specialist, especially if they are TICO-certified so your trip and your guests are always protected. In my many years experience in the industry, I’ve seen and heard of horror stories. Booking a destination wedding is not like booking any kind of holiday and it shouldn’t be treated as the same. Working with someone who has been to that destination and resort, who knows the onsite wedding coordinator, who’s had a destination wedding themselves and who’s planned hundreds of weddings before yours, will add invaluable benefits to making your destination wedding stand out and be the best it can possibly be.
